fc**tennis academy player Jasmine Asghar wins National Championships

There was some fantastic news to come from our tennis academy last week as Jasmine Asghar was crowned under 18’s National Champion.

The Nike Junior Nationals have been running for more than 100 years and has an illustrious line of past winners including Andy Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman, Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong.

The National Championships is one of the most prestigious tennis events in Britain and comes second to only Wimbledon juniors as the biggest junior event.

Jasmine played outstanding tennis throughout the tournament, dropping just two sets. She convincingly beat Eden Richardson 6-1, 6-2 in the final.

Unsurprisingly Jasmine was delighted with the victory, which she believes is a major step in the right direction for her career. She said:

“ I didn’t think I was playing my best tennis but I was winning matches and slowly improving.  Then everything just clicked in the final, it was one of the best matches I’ve played and to win a National Championships is just amazing. It’s so important for me and I believe this can be used as a key moment to kick on.”

Jasmine’s coach Marten Renstrom believes this victory will give Jasmine some much-needed confidence.

“For me it’s not a surprise to see her winning tournaments like this because she is one of the best under 18 players in the country. I hope this will give her the confidence she needs when it comes to these big matches.”

It turned out to be a fantastic week for Jasmine who got to meet one of her tennis idols and former British number one Anne Keothavong, who previously trained at Dukes Meadows up until 2001.

Anne, who won the National Championships back in 1999, retired from tennis last year. She said winning the tournament gave her a great platform to launch her career and hopes it will do the same to Jasmine.

The pair have arranged some hitting sessions together and Jasmine will look to get some good practice in before jetting off to Cyprus for an ITF event on the weekend.

Everyone at Dukes Meadows would like to congratulate Jasmine on her remarkable achievement
